Frequently asked questions

About the problem, and about the solution.

About number spoofing

Why are phone numbers so easy to spoof?

The global phone network (PSTN) was built decades ago without any check on the caller’s identity. Every connected carrier can send any number, and the network displays it without checking whether it is correct.

Why can’t the recipient tell the difference?

A phone simply displays the number the network passes on. Because the network doesn’t check that number, genuine and spoofed numbers look exactly the same.

Why can one weak carrier affect the whole system?

The phone network is a global collection of independent carriers. If one of them lets spoofed numbers through, that vulnerability applies to everyone.

Don’t standards such as STIR/SHAKEN solve this?

No. STIR/SHAKEN only works on certain IP networks. As soon as a call crosses older equipment or a national border, the verification is often lost. The EU and the United Kingdom consider this approach insufficient.

Why does internet telephony (VoIP) make it worse?

Many VoIP services let users choose their own caller number without strict checks. Once in the network, such a spoofed number is treated as a genuine one.

Can phones detect spoofing themselves?

No. A phone has no way of its own to check the caller’s identity and depends entirely on what the network passes on.

Don’t filters and checking apps help?

They help partly, but they react after the fact: they try to recognise suspicious calls once these are already in the network. They cannot actually prove a number.

About Trusted Voice

Does the recipient need to install anything?

No. The call arrives on an ordinary phone number and phone. No app, no account, no change in behaviour.

How long does implementation take?

Trusted Voice connects through an API to your existing contact centre, CRM or communication platform. Most organisations are operational within a few weeks.

Can criminals misuse the Trusted Voice network itself?

Within the network, every call is verified before it connects. A call that fails that check is not accepted.

How does this help with compliance?

Every verified call is recorded with a complete audit trail: who called, when, and that the network confirmed the identity. That is the evidence regulators and auditors expect under NIS2 and DORA.

What does Trusted Voice cost?

That depends on call volume and the integrations you need. Because verified calls are answered more often and are shorter, it often saves money as well. We are happy to make a calculation for your situation.
